How to Grow Raspberry Canes 1.) Check Outdoor Temperatures If your outdoor temperatures are above 85°F or below 50°F, start your raspberries indoors. 2.) Proper Soil Well-draining soil is extremely important! We recommend mixing at least 30% sand into a high-quality base soil. 3.) Starting Indoors (if needed) The roots should be planted horizontally rather than deep and vertical. Cover them with about two inches of soil and water thoroughly. Using a humidity dome (pictured above) over the cane is highly recommended, especially in dry climates. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. After two weeks of new growth, gradually acclimate the plants to outdoor conditions over the course of a week before transplanting them outside. Tip: A 2-liter bottle with the top cut off and small holes added makes an excellent humidity dome! 4.) Planting Outdoors The roots should be planted horizontally rather than deep and vertical. Create a 12-18 inch wide row, and using a hoe, carve out a 2-inch deep trench within the row. Rows should be spaced 6-8 feet apart, with plants positioned 3-5 feet apart. Spread the roots horizontally within the trench and water thoroughly. Grow Tip and Peace-of-Mind Oftentimes, raspberry canes will send up new growth from the roots rather than the cane.
